Auburn’s Local Rule Specifically Addresses Fences and Gates

Auburn Fire Department’s official Ember Resistant Zone guidance says any new building or structure construction must maintain a five-foot radius clear of vegetation and combustible material.

For fencing, the guidance is unusually specific: portions of combustible gates or fences that run perpendicular to and/or touch the structure must be constructed with non-combustible material for a minimum of 5 feet from the structure.

The City lists metal and fiber cement as sample non-combustible fencing materials when attached to the house or within 5 feet.

Auburn Fire Department updated the City’s Fire Hazard Severity Zone map in 2025 to align with the State Fire Marshal’s latest recommendations and local parcel conditions.

The City’s February 28, 2025 notice explains that when a parcel spanned multiple hazard classifications, Auburn adjusted the parcel to the highest classification present. The department also upgraded isolated lower-rated “doughnut hole” parcels surrounded by higher-rated zones.

The City’s July 2024 notice says the Ember Resistant Zone requirement applies to new building or structure construction. It separately says owners of existing buildings are strongly encouraged to voluntarily implement the same measures.

That distinction matters. An existing homeowner should not automatically be told that Auburn Municipal Code requires a fence replacement solely because combustible fencing currently touches the home.

However, replacing the first 5 feet with a non-combustible transition may still make sense for wildfire mitigation, insurance, a remodel or permit project, or future preparedness.

Do Not Confuse the Local Auburn Rule With the Pending Statewide Rule

Auburn’s local ERZ requirement for new construction has been effective since July 10, 2024.

California’s separate statewide Zone Zero emergency filing, OAL file 2026-0828-03E, was withdrawn on September 8, 2026 and is not currently in effect.
